First R. Tiny Adams Scholarship Awarded
The first recipient of the R. Tiny Adams Scholarship at Ivy Tech Community College was announced August 16 at Muncie City Hall.
Mary Whitenack, Human Services major from Muncie, will receive this first scholarship established in memory of R. Tiny Adams, Muncie firefighter, Indiana State Representative and community activist, to honor his generous spirit and a lifetime of service.
Adams is noted for having established high standards for public and volunteer service in Delaware County. As a legislator, Adams was known as a “people’s representative,” committed to representing his constituents with his full energy and attention regardless of race, wealth, education or status. In the community, Adams gave unselfishly of himself in service to Toys for Tots, United Way, American Red Cross, Children’s Museum, Special Olympics, Comprehensive Mental Health Services, Human Rights Commission and East Central Indiana Labor Council.
The permanent endowment in Adams’ name will provide annual financial awards to Delaware County students attending Ivy Tech Community College who have overcome personal challenges and who exhibit traits of leadership and compassion for others. The first award is for $500, but the amount is expected to grow as the scholarship fund grows. Scholarship founders are community members Shawn Adams, Mark Adams, Stefan Anderson, Phyllis Bartleson, Frank Brinkman, Keith Doudt, Margot Middleton, Ron Murphy, Dick Shirey and Sue Templin.
A single mother of two, Whitenack is pursuing an associate degree in Human Services at Ivy Tech. with hopes of working for a social service agency and going on to get a bachelor’s degree at Ball State University. Although Whitenack has been employed by Cardinal Health System for the past 18 years and previously earned an associate degree in Secretarial Science from Ivy Tech in 1988, she recognizes that her job as a medical transcriptionist could become obsolete and she needed to acquire some more marketable skills.
Whitenack is president of SERVE, Ivy Tech’s Human Services Club, and has participated in many activities in conjunction with Life Streams, Big Brothers/Big Sisters, Motivate Our Minds, Multiple Sclerosis Organization and Child Protective Services.
