IVY TECH PREPARES STUDENTS FOR WIND ENERGY CAREERS
Muncie, IN – Ivy Tech Community College East Central Region strives to arm its students with the skill sets they need to enter the workforce. A new industrial maintenance educational plan now offers students wind power related courses as electives with the intent of improving their employment opportunities. Having an associate’s degree with these electives will make students marketable in industrial maintenance and wind turbine maintenance careers according to Pat Jones, Program Chair of Manufacturing and Industrial Technology.
Jones has spent 16 years teaching industrial maintenance at Ivy Tech. Since the recent economic slowdown, Jones has researched employment opportunities for his students. His latest endeavor is training students to work on large scale wind turbines. “Industrial type maintenance at ground level is essentially the same as 240 feet in the air in the nacelle (compartment of components) of a wind turbine, but climbing and rigging skills must be developed. There are numerous wind turbine related job opportunities and some do not require climbing,” Jones stated.
The Muncie area has seen recent growth in wind turbine technology. Brevini Wind USA and VAT are two industrial plants that are located on the outskirts of Muncie. Vela Gear Systems LLC will open in mid-2012 to produce components for wind turbines in Marion adjacent to the Ivy Tech Community College Marion campus, said Jones.
Current industrial maintenance courses offered at Ivy Tech Community College East Central Region related to wind turbine maintenance include: print reading, workplace safety, basic electricity, introductory welding, computer fundamentals, motor and motor control, fluid power basics, machine maintenance installation, PLC I & II, wiring fundamentals, fluid power systems, electrical circuits, introductory renewable energy systems, wind power, and wind power mechanics.
