COMPASS Assessment

COMPASS: Why is the test so important?
The COMPASS is a skills assessment tool used by Ivy Tech to ensure you are taking classes that fit your academic needs. There is no pass or fail grade, but you need to complete a COMPASS assessment on campus before registering for classes. The COMPASS includes sections on writing, reading, and math.

You are required to complete a COMPASS assessment unless you have scores on the SAT, PSAT, or ACT that can be substituted for the writing, reading, and math portions of the COMPASS. Placement into higher level math courses may require higher scores. For more information on specific SAT, PSAT or ACT substitution scores please click here. Students with prior college credit from other schools may be waived from the COMPASS. Bring a copy of your college transcripts to campus and an advisor will determine if you qualify for a COMPASS waiver.

Since the results of your COMPASS will help determine which courses you will have to take, it's an important step in getting off to the right start at Ivy Tech. Here are a few pointers that can help you succeed:

  • Ivy Tech encourages you to brush up on your writing, reading, and math prior to taking the assessment and review the sample questions available at www.act.org/compass.
  • Please plan your schedule so you have plenty of time to complete the COMPASS assessment. You will not be timed, but it takes an average of 2-3 hours to complete all three sections (writing, reading, and math).
  • Because advising and other processes are dependent on the scores you receive on the COMPASS, you are encouraged to complete it as soon as possible, preferably several months before you intend to begin classes.
  • Please be prepared to provide your student ID number and a photo ID when you arrive to take the COMPASS.
  • To ensure the best possible working environment, children are not admitted into the assessment center, food and beverages are prohibited and cell phones/pagers must be turned off and stored.
  • You will take your COMPASS assessment at your local Ivy Tech campus. For a list of times the COMPASS is offered, please click on the campus you wish to attend below to view the available hours.

COMPASS testing is offered by appointment at the Richmond, Connersville or Rushville locations.  The test takes between 2 -3 hours to complete all three sections, which are Reading, Writing, and Math (Pre Algebra & Algebra). However, the test is not timed.

The COMPASS test will determine if a student is ready to take college courses. A photo ID such as a driver’s license, state ID card, government-issued photo id, etc. is required before the test can be administered. The student ID number (found in the applicant’s acceptance letter and beginning with C0) should be brought to the testing session if possible.

Students with a documented disability should contact Touré Conley, in Disability Services, at 765-966-2656 ext. 1211, or by e-mail at tconley18@ivytech.edu, to complete an Accommodations Request form to arrange accommodations.

Students should prepare to take the COMPASS test by studying.  Practice test packets are available at any of the testing sites or can be obtained by visiting this link Compass Practice Sites and printing the materials to complete at home. The important thing is to STUDY, STUDY, STUDY.

Ivy Tech has launched a new COMPASS review tool that allows you to brush up on your writing, reading and math prior to taking the COMPASS assessment. Access the review at ivytech.edu/compass-review and create an account. You will need your Ivy Tech email, found on your acceptance letter, to create your account.
