Biotechnology covers very broad areas that use living organisms or their substances to make beneficial products for humanity. Various natural sciences including cell and molecular biology, microbiology, genetics, physiology, and biochemistry, as well as medicine, engineering, and computer science are subdisciplinary areas of Biotechnology. In the last two decades we have seen remarkable advances in many aspects of biotechnology; identification of new diagnostic procedures for dreadful diseases such as cancer; development of drugs for the treatment of diseases; alteration of genetic make up of plants and animals; and production of bacteria that clean up toxic wastes. The 21st century provides us with tremendous potential for further development in the field of biotechnology to improve the quality of life for everyone. Rapid advancement and expansion of biotechnology strongly demand newly trained workforces in the area. The Hudson Institute projects that Indiana's life sciences/biotechnology industry could create 45,000 jobs over the next five years, with the majority requiring certificates, associates degrees, and bachelor's degree. Strong demands mean attractive salaries. The average salary of science technicians in Indiana is between $33,000 and $35,000 a year and those going on to a bachelor's, master's, and doctoral degree can earn even more.

Biotechnology Degrees at Ivy Tech
The Biotechnology program at Ivy Tech Community College offers Associate of Science (AS) and Associate of Applied Science (AAS) degrees. Transfer agreement with Indiana University also allows Ivy Tech students to pursue a Bachelor�s degree after completion of their degree at the college.
Who is Qualified?
High school graduates with a strong background in biology, chemistry, and mathematics are encouraged to apply. Professionals currently in other areas but want to retrain for a career in biotechnology are also excellent candidates for the biotechnology program.
