Ivy Arts for Kids

Ivy Tech offers engaging, age-appropriate art classes for children in four age groups: Pre-school-Kindergarten; Kindergarten through grade two; grades three through five; and grades six through eight. All materials are included in course fees.

Ivy Arts for Kids - Summer 2012
Using a variety of stories from every genre and from around the world as a jumping off point, campers will create fabulous and exciting works of art, celebrating their individual story as well as our collected stories and heritage. We’ll be dabbling in just about every art medium, too: from painting and mixed media collage to papier maché and ceramics!

Ceramics for Two: Parent/Guardian and Child (Pre-school-K)

Have fun and get messy with your little one in their very first ceramics class. Build a cereal bowl, cup, and plate for your own breakfast set. Create a keepsake handprint tile. Make simple pinched animals with textures. Roll out clay slabs and cut shapes with cookie cutters to make a mobile. Decorate with glazes, acrylic paints, and even glitter. Sign up early as class is limited to six pairs of kids and parent/ guardians.

Creatures in Clay (Grades K-2)

Images of weird wonderful wildlife, monsters, and mythical creatures will be our inspiration in this fun and imaginative class. We will use our imagination to create creatures in their environment, monster masks, creature cups and animal pins. Together we will learn various methods of hand building, including coiling, pinching, and slab construction. We will use these methods along with various texture tools to explore the theme of living creatures.

Mixed Media for Kids (Grades K-2)

Let's see what we can put together! Young artists will explore the combined uses of drawing, painting, collage, printmaking and assemblage to create unique art objects in both two- and  three-dimensional forms. Media may include fibers, fabrics, plastics, papers, wood, found objects, computer and photocopied generated materials, old pictures, and drawings.

Creature Creations: Drawing and Painting for the Young Artist (Grades 3-5)

In Session II we will create a class Field Guide to Bloomington Flora and Fauna. We will learn new techniques with pencil, colored pencil, permanent pen, watercolor, and other 2D materials while creating pages for birds, animals, and plants to combine into a class field guide. This session will focus more on observation than imagination skills. Each student will receive a copy of the field guide (likely in digital form) at the end of the session.

Ceramics for Kids: Wheel-throwing and Hand-building (Grades 3-5)

A wet lump of clay spinning under your hands turns into a bowl as if by magic. Welcome to the wonderful world of the pottery wheel. In this class we will learn wheel-throwing techniques like centering, forming, and finishing and hand-building skills like pinching, coiling, and rolling out slabs. We'll decorate using textures and glazes. You might want to take this class more than once. It's that much fun! Choose from Wednesday or Thursday afternoon sections.

Ceramics for Tweens: Playing in the Mud (Grades 6-8)

No experience is necessary to make cool stuff out of clay. Learn how to throw on the potter's wheel using skills to help center, pull up a piece, and attach handles or a lid. Create your own hand-built masterpiece using slabs, coil and pinch pot methods. You'll create your own mugs and bowls, explore three dimensional sculptures, as well as sculptural relief tiles, not to mention glazing, trimming and firing! Bring your creative ideas, and be prepared to get dirty and have fun. If you have prior experience you will be able to build on skills already learned. All materials are included in the course fee.
