Drawing and Painting
Drawing for Beginners and Beyond
Every field of art begins with drawing. Drawing teaches you first how to see, then how to translate, and finally how to imagine. In this class you will explore how to create space with line, and mass with shading. You will learn how to construct and execute compositions that make even unfinished drawings look finished. Additionally, you will learn the different types of pencils and their uses, as well as how to achieve effects using your eraser. Anyone can learn how to draw, and anyone who can draw can learn how to draw better.

Textiles
Itajime and Indigo Dyeing
In this 1-day workshop you will learn and apply traditional Itajime and Shibori techniques to dye and manipulate cotton fabrics of different weights and thread counts in Indigo. The Itajime technique compresses and clamps fabric to 'resist' the dye and to make geometric patterns. Shibori is the Japanese word for textile technique in which fabric is stitched or folded, bound, and dyed. We will be using the bound technique. You will go home with several 1/4 yard swatches. Please bring dishwashing-type rubber gloves and semi-old clothes.

Primitive Pottery Workshop
"Primitive" defines the way we will observe our materials and the way we will use them toward pottery made and fired in a primitive manner without tools of modern technology. Digging clay, forming vessels using simple tools, and firing them outside with found fuels are just a few basic steps to this class. The projects made in the studio by hand will be formed from everything primitive found in nature. We will collaborate on the method of firing of everyone's work. Multiple firings and field trips will be involved. Many cultures and methods of pottery production will be considered toward completing each project. In addition to hand-building vessels we will make our own clay tools and glaze brushes. This class will meet at the Waldron, but will be conducted in the field.
