Business Basics of Manufacturing
Business Basics for Manufacturing is a game-based interactive program that engages employees at all levels in the realities of the business bottom line. The culmination of the interaction is when participants form two simulated Chocolate Bar companies that will compete against each other for the most profit. Throughout the simulation board game, emphasis is placed on making decisions and their resulting impacts to a virtual business model for the production of chocolate bars. Foundational business principles are defined, calculated and used to make decisions as players compete in their simulated manufacturing facility. Principles explored include: profit, sales, cost, unit cost, return on sales (ROS), overhead, assessments, labor rates, cycle times and cycle adjustments.

In addition to a virtual business model, key background information is introduced using Visual Learning “PlayMaps”and interactive discussion.

For example, the PlayMap “The Organization’s Impact on the Community” is used as a springboard for discussion exploring:

• How does your paycheck impact more than just your bank account?

• What impact do taxes (personal and corporate) have on the community?

• What significance do corporate purchases have on the local economy?

BENEFITS TO YOUR ORGANIZATION

• Increase understanding of the past, present and future of manufacturing and commerce

• Show how each organization impacts the community

• Teach the basic business financial “tools” used daily in manufacturing

• Involve participants in simulated production decisions and their outcomes

• Demonstrate how each person can make a difference in the success of the organization

COURSE OBJECTIVES

• Describe the evolution of manufacturing and commerce

• Understand key business principles and terms, including profit, sales, cost, unit cost, return on sales (ROS), overhead, assessments,

labor rates, cycle times and cycle adjustments

• Calculate the above mentioned terms

• Apply the information gained in the session to make business decisions that benefit the organization

• Explain the financial impact of scenarios encountered during the simulation game

TRAINING DESCRIPTION AND MATERIALS

This course is instructor-led, fast-paced and utilizes “PlayMaps” and interactive discussion. Simulation is used, where two teams of manufacturers compete for market share and investors. Using table maps and scenario cards, each team encounters various problems throughout two weeks of simulated manufacturing. As decisions are made by the group, the financial impact of those decisions is shown and recorded. At the end of two weeks of simulated production, the company with the most profit wins!

HOURS AND COST

Your Business Basics for Manufacturing course is an 8-hour training activity, scheduled at your convenience for up to a maximum of 20 participants. 0.8 IACET Approved CEUs will be awarded upon successful completion of the course.
