Facts about the tutorial services offered by the Learning Lab

Who is eligible for tutoring?
Any Ivy Tech Community College of Indiana student who is enrolled in class may receive tutoring assistance at no cost to the student. We are here to help the students.

What kind of help can the tutor give?
Your tutor is expected to be knowledgeable, dependable, and committed to support you. Tutors have shown their own ability in class work by having successfully completed the class. They must have the ability to share, interpret, clarify, and guide the students’ efforts. However, they may not do your homework. Please do your homework before coming to the tutoring session. Have any questions you may have ready for the tutor to answer. The tutor will not do homework, but may give you similar problems and help you work through them.

How can I get a tutor?
A request form is available in the Learning Lab. It must be filled out before a tutor will be assigned to you. Since tutors have classes in addition to other students to tutor, help may not always be available at the time you prefer.

How much time can I have?
Tutoring can be provided for the entire semester, until you no longer need assistance or withdraw from the class. The limit is two hours a week, usually in one-hour sessions with no more than two subjects being tutored. This will also depend on tutor availability.

What do I do if I cannot make a session?
If you need to cancel a session, you must notify the Learning Lab (289-7001 extension 5337) twenty-four hours prior to the scheduled session. Punctuality is important. The tutor will wait 15 minutes past your scheduled time. If you do not arrive within the time limit, an unexcused absence will be marked on your record. After three unexcused absences, tutoring for the subject will be suspended until an explanation is given to the Learning Lab Coordinator.

Tutoring may also be suspended if there are too many canceled sessions and/or poor class attendance. Time is reserved on the tutor’s schedule for you. This means your tutor is not available to assist other students at that time. Tutors are not paid when sessions are canceled.
